Windows Update & At least One Service Or Driver Failed Message

Hello all. Hoping someone can give me a pointer on how to troubleshoot some
annoying anomalous behavior. I recently rebuilt a Win 2K SP4 Server based
machine, everything was good until I installed the recent patch of updates
through windows update. Now eveytime I boot I get the "At least one driver
or service failed message". I have examined the event log and don't see
anything unusual. I also booted with boot logging enabled and once again I
couldn't find anything out of the ordinary in the bootlog file. As far as I
can tell all services and drivers seem to be operating correctly. Basically,
apart from the annoying error message there's no indication anywhere else
that something has gone wrong during system startup. Any ideas on how to
isolate and identify the failing startup process?

Thanks for the reply. I've been busy trying to diagnose it...but no luck and
I think that I'm going to give up and just reinstall from scratch. Couldn't
find any "problem hardware" and I disabled every single startup program and
still no errors in the event log...but still the perplexing at least one
driver or service failed message on bootup. Looks like something is failing
but the record of it is not being recorded in the event or startup logs.
Very frustrating. I think that the error started happening right after I ran
windows update and I was using a more recent version of the VIA 4 in 1
drivers than in the past so I'm guessing the troubles must have something to
do with that. I'm going to start over ("again") and this time pat very close
attention to what gets installed and when. I'll post back if the trouble
reappears.

Jon,

You might consider uninstalling KB891711 and seeing if the problem goes
away. Please let me know.
