Windows Update 0x800A0046

I just upgraded my 2000 Professional machine to XP Pro. Upgrade seemed to
go ok, and it is running but I can not run Windows update. I keep getting
0x800A0046. I have searched Microsoft and the web and tried everything I
could find but no luck.

I don't even want to think about not being able to get updates. Anyone have
any suggestions? Can I somehow update my machine without using Windows
Update from Explorer?

First make sure the Update is enabled in the services control panel, by open
a run command and type in:
services.msc click [OK]
Locate the windows updates service and Enable it to Auto.
Lots of Answer to the same as yours go through them:

Thanks, nass, for your help. It was amazing to me how complex it can be to
get Windows Update to work. I have been running Windows since the days when
it came on 360K floppy disks and it took several seconds for each letter to
appear on the screen after you hit the key.

Microsoft itself has a series of suggestions which did not help me at all.
Finally I was looking in microsoft.public.windowsupdate and someone metioned
dial-a-fix. I tried it and asked it to fix my Windows Update. It tried but
told me that it could not since some permission settings were not correct.
It directed me to its Tools menu to use a fix permissions option. I did
that and then I was able to get it to fix Windows Update.

It is a shareware program and I am going to make a contribution. I already
spent several hours on this problem and it could have stretched to days.
