Windows Tries to Reinstall Apps whenever certain other apps are Run?

The machine is a Dell, XP Pro w.SP2 with Microstation V8, Inroads, Hypack
6.2a, MapTech software, ArcView 9.1 and several other high end surface
modeling programs. All was running well until yesterday. Today, when I
start Microstation, Roxio's EZCD Creator attempts to reinstall itself. When
I start ArcMap, Desktop Administrator attempts to reinstall itself. This is
very confusing. These programs are already installed and run just fine.
What have I done to cause this? Anyone?

We can't know what you did. Since this just started, do a System Restore
to when things worked.

Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore
"Restore my computer to an earlier time".

Thanks for responding. I will try to use a restore point, probably on
Monday. Is there a way to know how far back that will take me? A month back
may be too much for a production machine. While I have plenty of backups,
it'll still take a few days to get it sorted out.

Thanks

When you choose to restore your computer, you will see a calendar on the
left with dates in bold type. Click on one of the dates and on the right
you'll see the reason for the System Restore point. System Restore works
best when you restore to a date only a few days back, perhaps a week at
most. Your first post indicated that the problem just started today.
Therefore you should restore back to only yesterday, for example.

Mr Malke,

Thank you.

Your suggestion worked, sort of. I thought I'd take a moment to share the
results.

Normally I consider using a restore point sort of like shooting the hard
drive with a nine millimeter, but the point chosen was well behind my last
'updates.' It fixed the two broken programs (Microstation and Arcview), but
broke Symantec's real time software. Imagine that! With a little cleanup, a
Symantec removal and reinstall, I was back in business. I was also able to
determine which 'high tech' software did the damage and have related the
experience to the company (for their future reference).

Again, thanks,

Joe H

Glad you got things sorted. Thanks for taking the time to post your
solution.
