Windows Task Manager

I'm using XP home edition. Starting yesterday, when I do
CTRL-ALT-DEL to access Task Manager, the Applications tab
is an empty window, ie. shows no apps running at all. The
Processes tab still continues to show a long list of
threads. Anyone have any suggestion as to what happened??

run a virus scan, you have a virus that doesn't want you
to be able to shut it down.

What's the problem then? That's normal to have processes running but no
apps. For example at the moment I have three apps showing in the apps
page and 34 processes.
