Windows Task Manager

How do I go about to reduce my CPU percent (%) useage in Windows Task
Manager?
At this very time I have 17% - 29% useage.
I was told thru a tech call that this useage should be 7% or less.
My processes is not at 53.

Thanks for your assistance and consideration!!!

How computer savvy are you: Beginner, Occasional home user, Kind of know my
way around Windows, or Very savvy?

Reason I'm asking is that there is a program to manage all of the startup
programs that initiate as soon as you logon to Windows. But!!!, you have to
know what you are doing when you start disabling startup programs.

There are two ways. One way is through the Start>Run>msconfig box. The other
is to use the free "Startman" program or something similar. The first one
will require a reboot when you are done, and Startman can do the same thing
without requiring a reboot. Let me know your level of expertise and I'll give
you the steps, based on your answer. I'll check back at about 11am Pacific
time.

Nonsense. The CPU is there to be used. There's nothing wrong the percentage
you're seeing. You can reduce the CPU usage by running fewer or less
demanding programs. You can reduce it to zero by turning off the computer.

Are you having a problem? If not, don't go looking for one.

My processes is not at 53.

You have 53 processes running? That's not particularly unusual.

I HAVE INSTALLED 'START-UP COP' BUT DO NOT USE IT AS I SHOULD.
STARTMAN SOUNDS GOOD!
IS THIS ONE ANY GOOD?

Ken's right.

Having 53 processes running is not unusual, expecially if you have antivrus
and anti-spyware starting up whenever you logon.

My processor usage stays at about 7-10% unless I'm really doing some serious
file swapping or number crunching.

I currently have 51 processes running (including Norton AV, Ghost, and some
antispyware) and my CPU usage is only at 9%. The slowness might be due to a
lot of pagefile swapping due to a low amount of RAM. If you don't have more
than 256 MB of RAM (that's all most machines come with from the factory...),
then you might consider bumping it up to at least 512 MB. If you go to 1 GB
of RAM, you will have a pretty big cushion for multitasking and a noticeable
increase in performance. I have 2 GB in mine...

Browse through your startup and take a look-sy at everything that starts up
when you logon. A lot of downloaded stuff starts up by default when you
install it (Yahoo messenger, MSN Messenger, etc.). I f you don't need these
programs until you are ready to use them, then remove them from the startup
configuration. You can get there by using the Start>Run>mconfig and click on
the Startup tab and browse through there to look at the programs that run on
every startup.

If there's a couple of them that you don't need, then un-check them, click
"apply", click "OK", and then reboot.

This will also allow your machine to boot a little faster.

Hope this helps.
