Task Manager

i have had xp on my computer for about 6months now and recently if i try to
open the task manager it appears for about 2 seconds then disappers, the cpu
useage squares appear on the task bar however if i move my mouse towards them
they also dissapper. this is highly annoying as if a program frezzes i can
not use task mananger to end the program and such like.
is there anyway of getting to the settings of task manager to see if they
have been affected in anyway, or do i have to reinstall xp?
