Hi All,

I’m running Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 (build 2600) with all
required security hotfixes and updates.

I post the following information to assist in analyzing my problem.

Equipment:
Gateway 2000 GX7018E

Memory:
1014 Megabytes

Processor:
3.00 gigahertz Intel Pentium 4
16 kilobyte primary memory cache
2048 kilobyte secondary memory cache

Drives:
250.04 Gigabytes Usable Hard Drive Capacity
231.81 Gigabytes Hard Drive Free Space

PHILIPS DROM6216 [CD-ROM drive]
TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H552B [CD-ROM drive]

WDC WD2500JS-22MHB0 [Hard drive] (250.06 GB) -- drive 0

Communications:
SoftV92 Data Fax Modem with SmartCP
Marvell Yukon 88E8050 PCI-E ASF Gigabit Ethernet Controller
Marvell Yukon 88E8050 PCI-E ASF Gigabit Ethernet Controller - Packet

Printers:
Brother MFC-420CN Printer on BRN_6EDD63
Brother PC-FAX on BRN_6EDD63
PaperPort Color Printer Driver on BIPORT
PaperPort Mono Printer Driver on BIPORT

Other Devices:
OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller
Brother MFC-420CN LAN #2
USB Human Interface Device [Joystick] (3x)
Intel(R) 82801FB/FBM USB Universal Host Controller - 2658
Intel(R) 82801FB/FBM USB Universal Host Controller - 2659
Intel(R) 82801FB/FBM USB Universal Host Controller - 265A
Intel(R) 82801FB/FBM USB Universal Host Controller - 265B
Intel(R) 82801FB/FBM USB2 Enhanced Host Controller - 265C
USB Composite Device
USB Mass Storage Device
USB Root Hub (5x)

Additional programs and hardware I have running that may be causing the
problem:
SpeedStream DSL Modem
Linksys Cable/DSL Router
Office Professional 2000
Windows Live OneCare Antivirus Version 1.0.0
Expression Web Designer Beta CP 1 ver. 12.0.4017.1004
Belarc Advisor
Window Media Player - Beta 11
QuickBooks Pro 2000
HTML Tidy
MS Works

Hears my question:

When running windows task manager and using the “Processes Tab†I notice
that many of the same items are running at the same time. For instance:

Svchost.exe – Network Service – I show 3 of the same processes running
Svchost.exe – System - I show 3 of the same processes running
Svchost.exe – Local Service – I show 1 running

Is it normal for more than one of the same processes to be running at the
same time?

If not I can I eliminate the duplicate processes to keep them from running?

Thank you in advance,
Mary

I forgot to mention that there is a 35 – 45 second delay when saving a file
(kind of like a computer freez-up.) This is a constant problem. I’m not 100%
sure but I think it started after installing Windows Live OneCare, or perhaps
Expression Web Designer Beta CP 1.

Thank you,

Is it normal for more than one of the same processes to be running at the
same time?

Depends on how many services you have running.

I have two svchost.exes running right now.

My two svchost.exes are running RpcSs, AudioSrv, CryptSvc, Dhcp,
LanmanServer, LanmanWorkstation, Netman, winmgmt.

RpcSs = Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
AudioSrv = Windows Audio
CryptSvc = Cryptographic Services
Dhcp = DHCP Client
LanmanServer = Server
LanmanWorkstation = Workstation
Netman = Network Connections
winmgmt = Windows Management Instrumentation

Note: tasklist.exe does not come with XP Home.

The following works. I did it when I had XP Home.

1. Download Tasklist.exe.

Tasklist.exe available here:

Or...

Click on:
Tasklist.exe - Lists all processes & services (/Svc)

Or...

http://windowsxp.mvps.org/utils/tasklist.zip

2. Copy tasklist.exe to

C:\WINDOWS\system32
or
%windir%\system32

3. Open a Command Prompt.

Start | Run | type: cmd | Click OK |
When the Command Prompt window opens type:

tasklist /svc

Hit your ENTER key.

tasklist /?

You need to find the specific process in that application that's taking all
the CPU resources.

To find out more about Svchost.exe entries try Process Explorer:
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/ProcessExplorer.html

Once you have Process Explorer installed and running:
Click/Expand the Svchost.exe process that you are interest in.
Then highlight one of the process listed under Svchost, right click and from
the options listed select: google
This should display what out there on the web about that process.

It's perfectly normal to have several instances of Svchost.exe
running simultaneously.

A Description of Svchost.exe in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q314056

However, if Svchost.exe is using a large portion of your CPU
cycles, it has most likely been "hijacked" by a worm, Trojan, or
scumware.

Mary,

I had the same problem when MS first came out with their spyware product and
I unloaded their product and everything was back to normal. Files opened
with a snap... Just a thought. One of the 2 products you mentioned below
sounds like could be your problem to the files opening up slowly.

Hello Wes
The MS link above - have read it - at the bottom it says that it is for XP
Pro - the only other link from that article was to WINN2000.
A search in MS for tasklist for XP Home was no trace.
Does this matter

Hi Bruce,

In my case "Automatic Updates" was the culprit.
I turned it of and the problem went away.
