Windows Task Manager Bizarre Behavior

Using xp home sp2. Recently, when I bring up the task manager I only get a
window with tasks (applications running), no tabs & sometimes no way to
close w/o restarting; occasionally the icon will be present in the system
tray is which case I can rt. click & close. This is true whether I use
ctrl>alt>del or rt click on Taskbar to bring up the manager. Need ideas to
fix.
