Was wondering if anyone could help.
Windows XP home service pack 2
Was messing around with my non working dvd/cdrw player and decided to do a
system restore to an earlier date when restored the message in the subject
line came saying it was missing or corrupt. It says I can attempt to repair
by starting windows setup using the set-up CD-ROM and selecting r. well my
drive doesn't read cd's....what else can I do? windows doesn't load either.

That is the problem,..my dvd/cdrw drive was not being picked up and didn't
even show in the device manager. Checked out the connections in the
tower, which is a DELL Dimension 3300 and suddenly the drive was listed after
restarting the computer. Only thing was it wasn't reading any discs, so what
wrong did I do by system restore to an earlier date?...and what can I do
short of purchasing another DVD/CDRW drive or possibly another computer?

Checking the connections probably let the BIOS start seeing the drive again.
I would imagine that you are having trouble with something physical in your
drive, dirt, worn part, etc. My approack would be to borrow a friends CD, and
see if it corrects. if so, buy a new one. Well, maybe trying the old drive in
someone else's system might be an alternative.

Well that was no go.....took the drive out cleaned and used air to blow it
out and still nothing. Hopefully will try to get another drive somewhere that
does work. can't even get it to boot in safe mode by pushing F8 though.

well i got ahold of a plain old CD-rw it read the disc and started to repair
until I discovered i didn't connect the hard drive (I feel so dumb) and now
when I power down and power up again I get the same symptoms. and it won't
read the cd.

Is it possible that I need a new hard drive? I connected the one from a
Windows 98 and it booted up with that 98. reattached the one that isn't
initializing and it keeps telling me that it cannot find any hard disk drives

I think the system acts just like it has a bad flat cable for the drives, or
maybe a bad IDE plug on the Motherboard..
