Windows stopped recognizing DVDs

Both the DVD drive on my laptop (Philips CDRW/DVD CDD5263) and my external
burner (Lacie DVD RW ND-3540A) stopped recognizing DVDs today. Both still
play audio CDs fine, but when I put a DVD in either drive, it spins a few
times and nothing happens.

If I open "My Computer" with a DVD in the drive, the My Computer window
opens, but shows no information. Then my system crashes and I have to
re-start.

I've tried re-installing software/drivers for both DVD drives and
re-installed Windows Media Player 10. No fix.

I also ran Microsoft's AutoFix program with a DVD in the drive and I got the
folowing results:
Test [Policies] - Instance [E:\, Drive Type: 5]:
Result [HKCU\...\Policies!NoDrives]: OK {Absent}
Result [HKCU\...\Policies!NoDriveAutorun]: OK {Absent}
Result [HKCU\...\Policies!NoDriveTypeAutorun]: OK {Present}
Result [HKLM\...\Policies!NoDrives]: OK {Absent}
Result [HKLM\...\Policies!NoDriveAutorun]: OK {Absent}
Result [HKLM\...\Policies!NoDriveTypeAutorun]: OK {Absent}
Result [Driver level policies]: OK {
HKLM\...\Services\cdrom!Autorun (Present) <Allows>
HKLM\...\Services\cdrom\Parameters!Autorun (Absent) <Allows>
HKLM\System\CCS\Enum\...!AlwaysEnable (Absent) <Not set>
HKLM\System\CCS\Enum\...!AlwaysDisable (Absent) <Not set> }

Test [Drive Notification] - Instance [E:\, Drive Type: 5]:
Result [Legacy Notification]: OK
Result [AutoPlay V2 Notification]: Problems {
Service (Silent)
Shell (Deaf) }
Repair << [Autoplay V2 Event]
Step: No steps to take.
Result: This AutoPlay setting cannot be fixed. Either the device is
malfunctioning, or the wizard cannot determine the problem.
I'm out of ideas and this is very frustration. Can abyone else think of
anything I haven't tried?

Jason,

Browse the above link and see if any of it applies..

You might see if your video decoder checks out for MP10.. See above link..

What burning software do you use for both drives..?

http://kgiii.info/windows/XP/general/missing_CD-DVD_drives.html
The above link can be useful in clearing the upper and lower filters for the
drives or you can check and or fix the registry manually, even if the drives
are not actually missing per say.. You may need to reinstall you burning app,
if affected by the fix..
I have used the fix with no problems, it seems to help across the board with
multiple media or burning app conflicts..
Just keep in mind that there may be other issues that may be affecting the
drives too..
You may need to use a third party diagnostic tool to see a bigger picture..
