Windows stopped during boot

I

Information

We have Windows XP Home SP2, and it would just stop when booting up. Same
thing would also happen during Safe Mode...we would see the list of files,
and that is as far as it would get.

Tried doing a Repair INstallation, and it stops at a Windows with the
following:

lsass.exe - System Error
An invalid parameter was passed to a service or function.

If I click OK (only option), it reboots and restarts with the reinstall.

I would prefer not to have to salvage data, reformat the drive and
install/recover, I am curious about an interpretation on the messsage.

Thank you in advance for any insight, ,

Dan
