Windows sound turns off mysteriously

Over the last couple of days the sound on my computer seems to have switched
itself off. It is easy to restore through windows services but I am concerned
that this might be some sort of malware.
Additionally, when starting up internet explorer, it initially fails to
connect. On clicking "try again" it works fine.
I have run Norton Anti virus which detects no problems and have tried
spyware doctor which has deleted some minor risks but the problems remain.
The only program I have installed recently was spyware doctore after
finiding a huge amount of spyware.
Your advice would be very welcome
Machine is Dell 830 running XP
Best wishes

Hey Jonathan Ive been having the same problem since yesterday, i havn't done
anything at all considering changes to the computer, yesterday morning it
just stopped playing sounds, I did recently get new speakers, but that was
almost 2 months ago now and I have not had any problems with those. Ive
checked the "Sound and Audio Devices" part and it now says that "Theres no
audio input connected"? Cant figure out what the problem is...

Try finding windows services in systems tools and you scroll down until you
see windows sound and you can enable the sound.

The sound shutoff problem - I emailed Dell support. 2 hours later they
had a new motherboard on its way here. The board was installed
(warranty thing) but had no effect on the problem. I still can watch
movie trailers and video, but they are silent.
