Monitor Is Not Automatically Turning Off

Hi:
Under power options I have my monitor set to turn off every 15 minutes. It
does not turn off unless I go into the power menu and then hit OK. Any
ideas? I have XP SP2 on a Dell Dimension 8400. I don't believe I have any
spyware on my system. I have the usual anti spyware software including
Microsoft's Defender which is running in the background. Thank you very
much, Kent

Kent,

I recently ran into the same problem with my Dell which is similar to yours.
Power and screen saver always worked without a problem, so I don't know if
it was a recent update from Microsoft that caused my problem or a drive
update, etc. Anyway, the only fix I found with my most recent encounter
with this problem was to turn off the screen saver. After turning off the
screen saver, the power option worked again.

I have had this same problem in the past with my Dell and found that
installing the latest video driver helped - I assume you have NVIDIA like I
do. Strangely enough, I found in the past that a weak mouse or keyboard
battery (if your wireless) or a loose connection (if wired) would send a
false signal to the computer indicating a non-idle situation preventing the
monitor from powering off. Hope this helps.

Thanks Bill. I will try your suggestions. I have the screen saver on but
set to 9999. I use it for a password from time to time. I have the latest
video drivers. I have a wired mouse and it is fairly new. This seems to
have happened just in the last 3 or 4 weeks I think for me so I also think
it is some update or software that I installed. But I have installed a lot
since then and narrowing it down would be very difficult. Thanks again.

If you have your screen saver set to 9999 it means that it will wait 9999
minutes before displaying the screen saver, and after 15 minutes of screen
saver display, the monitor will turn off,

simple as that. test it with one min of wait before screen saver, and 1 min
before turning off the monitor.

Thanks for your suggestions Stuserver. Once I go into the display
properties tab though the monitor does consistently shut off at 15 minutes
of activity even with the screen saver at 9999 minutes. It works all day
then at precisely 15 minutes. But when I first start my computer in the
morning and without going into the display properties the monitor does not
shut down. I will try restarting my computer with the screensaver disabled
and also with your suggestions of 1 min to see if it works. Thank-you! Kent
