Windows shuts down in the middle of my work-"Stop error screen"

Dear madams and sirs:

We have a new Dell desktop computer with 1GB of RAM. In
the midst of working on IE, Word, and/or playing
solitaire, a blue screen in apparent DOS mode arises that
reads the following (and I lose all the current work):

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut
down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error
screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears
again, follow these steps:

Disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disk deframentation
or backup utilities. Check your hard drive configuartion,
and check for any updated drivers. Run CHKDSK /F to check
for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

Technical information:

*** STOP: 0x00000024 (0x001902FA, 0XB274D320, 0XB274D020,

Physical memory dump complete.
Contact your system administrator or technical support
group for further assistance.

After rebooting, the same screen pops up on about a daily
basis. I run Norton Antivirus and am reluctant to turn it
off for fear of getting an unwanted virus.

Can you please tell me what needs to be done to prevent
this stop message from appearing and shutting down
Windows?

Thank you.
