Windows Shutdown

why ????? does Vista always use sleep mode as default
I want it to remember what I used last like all windows versions in
past did
Sleep does not work in the first place it is more like a coma
only way to recover from sleep is a hard reset or turning it off
the computer
is there a registry entry to select reboot or shutdown
as the default ?

thanks for your help

Well, change the settings in Control Panel | Power Options to what you want.

For me, Sleep has never worked. I can put my two
machines in Hibernation, but the Sleep function does
not function. It will shut off the screen but then does
nothing else. And bringing my computer out of Hibernation
can take as long as booting up- I might as well just shut
down the computer. And, I'm not talking about just showing
me my desktop- yes, Vista mostly gets to the desktop quickly.
However, most of the time, getting to the desktop doesn't
mean your computer is useable, yet. After Hibernation, I
have massive disk activity for 5 to 10 minutes- I can't do
anything.

The one exception- at the logon Screen, in the bottom
right corner- there's an option to put your computer to
sleep- that actually works. Before I logon, I can put my
computer to Sleep. I can also logoff, and from that screen
put the computer to Sleep. Some of the silliest shite I have
seen. Just like you, once I have tried to put it to Sleep- and
even though it doesn't actually seem to go to Sleep- the only
way I can get it to come back on is by hitting the power button.

I don't know how such a basic function of power management
can be fudged so bad. *Never* had these problems with XP-
Sleep/Standby always worked flawlessly.
