Windows Security Update CD

A snippet of information from the "action" newsgroup, now passed on to
several motherboard newsgroups:-

I thought I would pass along to these three newsgroups that Microsoft has
just released the above update CD. It covers Windows 98, 98SE, ME, 2000 and
XP and is totally free - they don't even charge you for shipping. This will
probably be a very good thing for those of us who have a dial-up connection
or just want protection when installing Windows fresh before checking out
Windows Update for the first time. I already ordered mine and it's very
easy - they simply want your name, address, phone number and an e-mail
address (I gave them a valid but junk e-mail account address that I have at
Yahoo). Check out the CD here:

http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/cd/order.asp

I have ordered one. Freebie, including shipping (at least to the US)
Additional security and a time-saver in Windows Update download- time
(broadband or not..) for those of us who build, repair, maintain PCs.
Also, a little extra comfort for those of us using older OS's to
run legacy software should M$$ ever pull the plug on downloaded
updates for these OS.

However, please note that the release apparently contains only the
Critical Updates and does not contain the non-critical ones and
drivers. Will find out more about its completeness when I receive my
disk(s?)

Just a suggestion. If you regularly re-install, or install XP on various
machines, its a lot easier to slipstream SP1 and the Update Rollup onto a
bootable CD. Took me maybe 15 minutes to do everything necessary to setup
and burn the CD. Sure beats using Windoze Update.

Excellent instructions are available here:

how do you slipstream in the Rollup?

About halfway down the page I referenced, there is a link to an additional
page

You have to edit a couple if .inf files, but it is pretty simple
step-by-step instructions.

I never thought the windoze update was all that difficult. A couple of
mouseclicks and you're done.

For those on broadband yes, but what if your machine is unpatched and
you want to update? You have heard of MyDoom and the ilk havent you?

As soon as you network (internet that is) a un-patched machine, I
personally give you 3-8 minutes tops until you are infected.

Of course, you also forget that this CD has patches for a few operating
systems on it, and it is primarily made for those in IT who have to
worry about large non-homegenous deployments.

Of that, I am very well aware..............

And FREE is FREE...............even from M$$. You can always spam
filter them if it triggers any junk mailers from M$$.

Just ordered one for myself ... the email I received from MS says ...
"Ordered From: Windows Security Update CD February 2004 Release"

So, apparently the release has been updated.

Feb release contains files up to Oct 03.
exactly what they tell you on the page when you order

I looked fairly closely as I went through the process and I didn't see
that anywhere. I'd think that would leave MS open to some liability if
they included files that dated and I'd be surprised to see them do
that.
