Windows Security Pop-Up Requires Logon for WinMail Retrieval

WinMail was working fine after logging off last night. Starting today e-mail
does not arrive in my Inbox, cannot send mail either. When I click the
Send/Receive button, a Windows Security pop-up appears and requires me to
logon to my account. This has never happend before. Any info I put into the
username and password do not log me on to my own mail. What gives? I have
owned this machine for just over one year. Thanks.

If you are sure you are you are entering the correct username and
password, one possible cause for that error is account corruption.
One thing you should try as a quick fix is to delete that corrupted
mail account, restart Windows Mail, then recreate that account.

If that doesn't fix it, more drastic measures will have to be taken.
Which antivirus are you running?
As a minimum, email scanning in the antivirus must be turned off,
although that may not be sufficient to eliminate all bad effects.
In a worst case scenario, your antivirus may need to be uninstalled.

If turning off the email scanning function does not resolve your problem,
consider upgrading to Windows Live Mail, because it is less prone to
suffering bad effects from overly aggressive antivirus programs.

Email scanning in any antivirus must be disabled, for reasons

Gary,

There is, of course, a fourth option that you didn't mention. I had this
problem pop up on three different computers this weekend virtually
simulataneously. This suggests to me that your three "options" are not
viable. Instead, it strongly suggests that the fault lies with MS. Any
chance you get look into this and get this bug fixed?

Windows Mail is not going to be "fixed". There have been no updates to it
in the past 2 years, and it has been "replaced" with Windows Live Mail.

Although there may be some bugs in Windows Mail, they are not
associated with connecting to mail servers or downloading
messages from mail servers. For most of us, those functions work
quite well.

Microsoft will not fix any remaining bugs in Windows Mail, since
the program has been replaced with Windows Live Mail.

Hmmmmm. Then a mystery since I downloaded MS Live Mail, which looks pretty
good by the way, and I have found the same problem with a Windows Security
pop-up directing me to enter username and password. Though I have worked
diligently with my ISP (Verizon) to reset these parameters, the problem
remains for both Mail and Live Mail. Any other suggestions?

Are all three computers downloading mail from the same mail server?
If three different computers came up with the same issue simultaneously,
that points the finger of blame to the mail server.

Do you have any other mail providers besides Verizon? If not,
I suggest getting a free Gmail or Hotmail account and setting that up
in your Windows Mail. If that new account works fine, it would tend
to implicate the Verizon mail server as the culprit.

Which antivirus are you running? Some of them are not fully compatible
with Windows Mail. To check the possibility of account corruption, delete
one of your mail accounts that is having the problem, restart Windows Mail,
then recreate that account.

I though it could be Verizon, too, until I entered the appropriate user id
and password at "biz.verizon.net" and had no problems. These computers are
not running simultaneously. I just got home from work and downloaded Live
Mail at this computer. Same problem. It's very odd. My outgoing STMP is
"outgoing.verzion.net." Never had a problem before now. While I was
inclined to blame Verizon, I am more certain that the problem lies with MS.

I will try the gmail route to see if I can implicate Verizon. I am running
AVG on these computeres, but have never had this problem before. I turned
off the scanner function and rebooted, but no luck.

At first I thought this was a Verizon issue too. I had a Verizon tech
remotely log into my machine and basically check all credentials (didn't
work) and then create two new WinMail accounts which did not work either.
Since I was able to access my e-mail via Verizon web mail the tech told me it
was somethig with my machine. I have Norton anti-virus. The e-mail scanning
had been on then turned off with no change. I have since turned the scan
function back on.

This is the failure I get; Account: 'incoming.verizon.net', Server:
'incoming.verizon.net', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR invalid
command', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number:
0x800CCC18.

Thanks for any help.

Hey! After fooling around with my mail it is now working. In the Server Tab
in Properties; Deselected "Log on using Secure Password Authentication" and
selected "My server requires authentiaiton." I don't have any idea how
thesegot honked up in the first place and could sware that each was chenged
over the course of trying to fox this problem. At any rate, appars to be
workig again just as before. Thanks.

To see if Verizon is the cause of the problem, get a free Gmail account:
http://mail.google.com/mail/signup
Then set it up by following these instructions:

AVG has a problematic email scanner that doesn't completely
turn off when you 'disable' it. Your AVG antivirus was probably installed
with its default install option. If so, uninstall it, then reinstall, but select
'custom' install, which then allows you to unselect installing its troublesome
email scanning module.

While AVG is uninstalled, try Windows Mail again, just to see if AVG was
the culprit.

Yes, the "invalid command" part of your error message is usually caused
by that Secure Password Authentication setting.

Based on my experience with Verizon, it could be that Verizon had a
temporary problem. If so then use of their online email site proves nothing
but Verizon people will still insist that the software for their online site
is exactly the same as the software for POP access. Obviously that is
incorrect; there must be differences since they don't use the same protocol.

You can be driven to a heart attack or near to it and Verizon will continue
to insist it cannot be a Verizon problem. For me, the first time I used my
Verizon email address I was unable to send a message. The error message
clearly indicated that it was the Verizon server that rejected the messages.
Yet an hour or two later the exact same message(s) were sent successfully.
