Which school server are you using? You mention both
student.mail.uoguelph.com and Student.mail.uoguelph.ca. They could
be just two different names for the same machine, but if not, you may be
using the wrong one.

Does your connection to whichever one you are using cross over
from some other internet provider's equipment to the school's
equipment? If so, and the connection uses port 25, such connections
are often blocked to cause trouble for spammers, and the internet
providers responsible for such blocks don't always tell you about
them in advance. If this is the problem, ask the school if you can
use some other port instead; other ports are seldom blocked this
way.

Did you use the standard install for the avast! software? If so, it
often helps to uninstall it, then do a custom install where you tell
it to leave out the part that scans email.

Are you entering your username with no CAPITAL LETTERS?
Have you tried it both followed and not followed by the part of
your email address starting with @? Are you sure you use
CAPITAL and lowercase letters in the correct places in your
password? Some email servers care about which way you do
this; some don't.

it's a VISTA problem which microsoft should've fixed a long time ago.
Seems
there should be some way to bring a class-action suit against what
microsoft
has done to its trsting customers.

No, it's not a Vista problem. Many of us having been using Vista's
Windows Mail for over one year, without encountering that problem.
It would be more constructive to offer helpful suggestions.
