Windows search not responding

The search area for finding files, etc on my hard drive
does not respond. I enter a search item and hit 'search'
and the program hangs and then displays the "Not
Responding" error. I can't find files on my computer via
the search option. I am running Windows XP Home on a
Gateway computer.
