Wish I was diving

Since I have changed my motherboard and the processor (from Intel
915/Pentium4 3GB to Gigabyte P35/Core2 1,8GB) my computer stops responding as
randomly as unpredictably. I thought in the beginning that it was a game
related problem but shortly after I found out that the hangs happen without a
pattern (at least none I could make out).

Also, if I search for files or folders on my computer (not IE) the program
stops responding as I hit the 'search' button.

I don't want to bother you guys with how to fix this because I will change
the motherboard again with a new Intel board and new processor (Core2 too but
a bit faster) - which I should have done in the first place. My point is
rather this: the Microsoft recommendations on this can not be 100% trusted -
does anyone know the best procedure to execute such a change of hardware?

Damn, I really wish I was diving instead.

Thank you for that Bob - I'll check it out tomorrow. Got to kick some young
blokes around the football pitch (but I still wish I was diving instead).
