Windows script letters changed

I have a friend whose windows xp system is infected with something.
His desktop window, start icon program files icon ,... infact
everything is displayed using garbage letters and not english.
Although his system works well but the letters look garbage. we can
only make out which programs are which using the icons but the letters
are garbage.


What could have happened?
Could you tell me if this is some kind of virus or worm?

This might indicate that one of the font files is damaged.
What shows in /Control Panel / Display / Appearance / Item = Icon ?
You can reload fonts from the Windows CD using SFC.EXE =
System File Checker.
