Windows says I have 1 mail message...

When ever my computer goes into standby mode and I come back and press the
keyboard I am greeted with the login screen. It shows my little icon and
tells me how many programs I have running and says that I have 1 unread mail
message. If I put my mouse over this, it tells me the account that has the
message. Problem is, there are no messages waiting for that account. I have
checked every folder in my email program (Outlook2003) and there are no
unread messages. I have certainly checked the server for new mail and there
is nothing waiting. I have even logged into my account through my hosting
companies webbased email viewer and there is nothing there. Am I missing
something? or is this a "bug"/glitch?

Download, install and run TweakUI, one of the MS powertoys. There is a
setting in TweakUI to disable displaying the email count on the welcome
screen or to reset the count. Here is a link to the download.

Here is a KB article about this issue.

Compliments of Kelly:

Use TweakUI/Logon/Unread Mail and Repair/Unread Mail Count
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

Disable Unread Mail on the Welcome Screen (Line 100)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

To remove an account or to change the count manually:

Start>Run>Regedit>navigate to this key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail\[Your
E-Mail Address]. In the right pane modify: Message Count, Change it to 0.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail. In
the right pane modify: MessageExpiryDays Change it to 0.

I googled this and got the same response that you all posted here. In fact I
already have TweakUI installed and found the entries. I guess my question
was, is Windows telling my I have mail simply an error? and I assume it is
fairly common since there is a registry "tweak" to work around it?
