Windows Remote Assistance

My dad has new laptop & PC novice - I have been helping him set it up
remotely using remote assistance - I notice that invitations seem to have an
expiry time - so if i close the remote assistant accidentally - he has to
email a new invite

1/ It can also work using IP address but it suggests that this can only work
on the same network - So can we (not being on same network) only use the
email invite method (with expiry issues)?

2/ Is there a better way of remotely connecting by setting up a user account
for myself on his machine so he will have nothing at all to do?

3/ We spent a couple of hours on the phone tonight (im talking him thru
what's happening) - Is there anyway we can talk to each other via remote
assistant?

He can also initiate Remote Assitance through Windows Live Messenger, if you
are both using that.

If he has Vista Business, Enterprise or Ultimate, you could connect through
Remote Desktop instead. If he has Home Basic/Premium, I recommend you use
TeamViewer. It's incredibly easy to set up, and works through NAT without
any port forwarding. www.teamviewer.com

I use Skype, but it does slow things down, as it uses a lot of the bandwidth
on your connection to eachother. You can also use Windows Live Messenger
for audio chat, instead.

So if we have a mic (which we have) - can we talk & do via Windows Live
messenger?

Yes. You should be able to talk through Windows Live Messenger while using
Remote Assistance (which you can also initiate through it).

Remember you can get a Microsoft Passport to use Windows Live Messenger with
any email address, and not only a Hotmail address. Not everybody seems to
realise this and get a Hotmail address just for Windows Live Messenger.

I routinely use Skype® and Remote Assistant so I'm sure Messenger will also
work fine without any problems.
