Hello everyone,

My brother and I both have Windows Vista Home Premium. We tried to do
a remote assistance and we just could not connect. it kept giving us
the error "Could not connect, may have closed remote assistance" we
have tried to connect both ways. him to me, and me to him with the
same results. we have both disabled our firewalls in our routers and
even droped windows firewall. we made sure the the "Enable windows
remote assistant" was checked as well. I have ran out of ideas. is
this a bug. I have been able to do remote assistance to a friend with
xp, I connected to his machine, no problems their. Please help.. Thanks

Hi,

Usually this kind of problem is due to how the RA packet is set up. It will
contain the internal (behind the router) IP of the machine to be accessed,
and from an external source this will be useless. Try connecting via
messenger as a workaround, or alternately one of you will need to modify the
RA file to contain the external IP of the router rather than the internal
one assigned to the machine.

Thanks for the info, Is this a bug with vista or am I just doing
something wrong?

It's not a bug, it's the way RA works. The problem is that when the machine
creates an RA file to send, it picks up its assigned IP. When the machine is
behind a router, it gets the internal IP assigned by the router's DHCP
server (usually 192.168.x.x). The problem is that the receiving machine will
only look for that local IP, not the IP that is assigned to the original
user's router/modem for access to the outside world. To fix it, the sender
needs to login to the router and locate the external IP assigned to them by
their service provider. Then either they or the recipient needs to edit the
RA file and change the source IP from the internal one to the external one.

Hi,

You're initiating RA via messenger and not just passing the RA file that
way, correct?

Um, yeah, Norton's could (in fact, no telling what problems it can cause).
If he disables it (run msconfig, check both startup and services), are you
able to connect?
