WINDOWS REGISTRY ERROR

I get this following blue screen on my laptop which has XP Home ed.

STOP: C0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the
hive(file):
\SystemRoot\System32\Config\SECURITY or its log or alternate. It is
corrupt, absent, or nto writable.

I have gotten to the part of the Recover Console where it asks me to enter
the Administrator Password, I enter the security password I had on the
WELCOME screen for loging on to XP but it keeps on saying that the passwprd
is invalid. But I am entering the passwprd correctly. After three failures at
the password, I have to restart the laptop So I cannot even log onto it to
try to run chkdsk/p or try to fix the registry. Anyonw know how to get around
this ? I really do not want to reinstall cause I have important data that I
do not want to lose ! Any help is greatly appreciated.

By default, the Administrator account has a null/empty password. When
you are prompted for it to access Recovery Console just press Enter.

Hi,

You need the administrator password, not the one you use for your user
account. In a WinXP Home system, the administrator account is hidden and no
password would be set. Just hitting <enter> at the prompt should be
sufficient to access the Recovery Console. There is, however, a known issue
with the admin password being blank in preinstalled systems done with
sysprep:

In those cases, you should use the 6 disk floppy set as a workaround:

Using the WinXP Boot floppy set:

The password being requested is that of the built-in
_Administrator_ account, not the password for any other administrative
user accounts that the computer's owner may have created. Unless the
owner deliberately set the Administrator's password via the Management
Console (_not_ the Control Panel), it's probably still blank. WinXP
Pro asks the installer to set the Administrator's password during
installation, but WinXP Home doesn't.

I get the same message c0000218 {registry file failure} . I don't have the
windows xp cd because my computer was repaired and software installed by a
computer repairman. Is there anyway to fix this problem without it?

you can temporarily assign yourself administrative permission and you will
still be logged in as a normal user. Hold down the Shift key as you right
-click on the Program File. Next click on the Run As. Then type in a user
name and password that have Administrative Permission it should let you
continue after that.
