windows recovery partition

I do not have an installation disk. I cannot or dont have anymore a way to
get to setup upon boot Its an old Gateway system. I'm running XP PRO/SP3. I
went to cmd and exe SFC/SCANNOW. Message returned stated:
Files required for windows to run properly must be copied to the DDL Cache.
Insert system CD. I dont have one. I seem to remember XP Pro stores a backup
in a partition on the hard drive to restore to factory default state that can
be installed If a system failure occurs. 1) How do I use this utility?
2) Will It restore the ability to
restore the set up menu?

1) Only Gateway knows for sure, since each OEM sets up recovery in their
own way.
2) See above. Generally, the recovery partition erases the rest of the
hard disk and reinstalls the software that was on the computer when it
left the factory.

Thanks I'll see what Gateway has to say, other part of prob is it came
/wwin.98, I've since added 80 gig WD HDD created 4 (20gig vol's), mirrored
old 20gig quantum to newC: [drv1-vol1] in NTFS and reformmated it {old
quantum} 4 times and left it 1 partition in FAT32. If it does reinstall,
It'll revert back to win 98 which means I have a long night ahead of me.
Since I posted I created a system backup to my G: drive (DRV1-VOL1) and
afloppy ASR disk. That way Ill be able to restore to XP pro If I do indeed
create a nightmare. Again thanks, If u think of anything else please let me
know
