Do you have a "restore point" from when your machine worked? If so, what
happened when you did a restore?

I'm amazed that it took this long. I figured it would be hours, a
couple of days at most.

Unless there's some earlier thread, appertaining to this, that I've
overlooked, your request for assistance is seriously lacking in detail :

As [even] a general query, a post needs to "spell out" three things ; a).
what you remember doing that took you from a time when everything 'worked'
okay, b). what you perceived actually happened (including any error
messages observed) and c). any steps you have taken / things you have tried
in attempting to solve the problem...

After posting a general outline that includes those fats, you may also then
go on to include detail concerning make / model / pc configuration / etc.,
afterwards...

Here are some more details.

I have been trying to re-install Windows XP Pro Service Pack 2.

I ran sp2 for about 2 years with only one minor hardware issue with my
internal modem.

Since getting sp3 and the security fixes, my system is getting many
hardware problems as well as software problems.

Windows won't let me uninstall sp3.
I do not remember what message if any that it gave when it failed.

Based on past experience in reinstalling Windows XP sucessfully, I
did the following:

I deleted some key files in the root directory and tried to reinstall
sp2 using my XP sp2 install disk.

It says I need an earlier version installer cd (like Win 98).

I threw my Win98 install disk away last year thinking I would never
need it.

I returned all those files back where they came from using my install
disk.

I then tried to reinstall all the up to date drivers for all of my
hardware.

It got 3/4 thru and then it said the installer failed. (Windows
installer)

Here are some more details.

After logging in, box comes up and says

Application Error

Exception EOleSysError in module Skype.exe at 0013FE7D
RPC service is unavailable.

When I start Event Viewer, I can see the log of events but I cannot
open any of them to see what the error or warning is.

According to Andy...

< quote >
It's easier to use a disk imaging program and store the images on
another drive.

If you have downloaded files since your last image backup, copy them to
another drive before you create the new image.

System restore is unreliable.
< /quote >

So he doesn't think System Restore is relaible but he does have an image
so he should NOT have a problem. ;-)

Excellent!!! Glad it's all sorted out now!

Agreed. Considering the list of things he's already done, each messing
things up more than the last, a clean install after format is indicated.
He's mucked the system up repeatedly with the steps taken.

Any chance you are using Kaspersky?

How extremely helpful. (Good luck Andy - I suspect it is sortable.)

I'm not so sure it's sortable, at least not by someone who doesn't know
what they are doing, yet goes on to "delete some key files in the root
directory" without a backup. Someone who refuses to provide pertinent
details up front, who refuses to provide pertinent details when
directly asked, who refuses to accept suggestions when offered. Someone
who seems willfully determined to take the most destructive course
possible, against the advice of those he's asked help of, and make an
already bad situation worse.

I find it difficult to muster any sympathy. Actually, I'm pretty sure
it's all an attention-grabbing stunt.

Per Andy:
I don't understand the question as far as it relates to the
difficulty.

If you are not using Kaspersky anti-virus, the comment is moot.

But if you are, the article says that Kaspersky is hosing CP systems.

I have been trying to re-install Windows XP Pro Service
Pack 2.

I ran sp2 for about 2 years with only one minor hardware
issue with my internal modem.

That has nothing to do with SP2. Nor would it SP3.
Since getting sp3 and the security fixes, my system is
getting many hardware problems as well as software
problems.

SP3 is not causing hardware problems. You will still have them, assuming you
really do have hardware issues, when you go back to SP2.
Windows won't let me uninstall sp3.
I do not remember what message if any that it gave when
it failed.

That has to be your own doing. Either you removed the uninstall string, log
or something else necessay, or you machine has corrupted files on it.
Have you recently run chdsk on ALL of your drives?
You give nada for error messages or anything else that would help others
to help you.
Based on past experience in reinstalling Windows XP
sucessfully, I did the following:

I deleted some key files in the root directory and tried
to reinstall sp2 using my XP sp2 install disk.

Why would you bother doing that? It could only have negative impacts and
nothing positive.
It says I need an earlier version installer cd (like Win
98).

Then your XP is likely an Upgrade Version and it needs proof you owned a
qualifying older product. Just the keycode is often enough to satisfy the
requrements, dependiing.
I threw my Win98 install disk away last year thinking I
would never need it.

Never throw out old OS discs; stash them somewhere safe.
I returned all those files back where they came from
using my install disk.

I then tried to reinstall all the up to date drivers for
all of my hardware.

Did you get EVERY driver update from the manufacturer? If not, you could
have a real mess there.
It got 3/4 thru and then it said the installer failed.
(Windows installer)

I wouldn't doubt it, you've created such a mess there. Don't you have any
VSS backups or archives you could use? If not, you've been doing some pretty
stupid things.

I would hazard a guess that there are a lot of things you don't know and
research might be your only saving factor now the barn door is still partly
open.

Skype is trashed; Did you try booting into Safe Mode?

Remove Skype and see what happens. Use Safe Mode to remove it.
When I start Event Viewer, I can see the log of events
but I cannot open any of them to see what the error or
warning is.

Warnings are unimportant as long as they are not follwed by an ERROR entry.
Tming issues can delay the ability of some things to open for awhile, but as
long as they do open, you're fine at this stage of the game.

Something on your machine is trashed. Use Safe Mode for troubleshooting as
much as possible.

Or use msConfig to start with nothing loaded but the OS itself files. If
things work, start re-enabling them until it quits working right. f you nail
down a culprit, then fix it at the source; msConfiig is only a
troubleshooting tool; and not the way to fix anything. It's like a bandaid
and bandaids can fall off.

What happens when you click Properties in the right-click menu or double
click the warniing entry?
You belly-ache a lot but don't give any meaningful information that would
allow others to help you properly.

I think you're in over your head.

HTH,

Twayne`
