Here's a great example of how dumb you are; did you even look at that link?
It answers your question completely.

Unless there's some earlier thread, appertaining to this, that I've
overlooked, your request for assistance is seriously lacking in detail :
As [even] a general query, a post needs to "spell out" three things ;
a).
what you remember doing that took you from a time when everything
'worked'
okay, b). what you perceived actually happened (including any error
messages observed) and c). any steps you have taken / things you have
tried
in attempting to solve the problem...
After posting a general outline that includes those fats, you may also
then
go on to include detail concerning make / model / pc configuration /
etc.,
afterwards...

Here are some more details.
After logging in, box comes up and says
Application Error
Exception EOleSysError in module Skype.exe at 0013FE7D
RPC service is unavailable.
When I start Event Viewer, I can see the log of events but I cannot
open any of them to see what the error or warning is.

Click "Start", "Run", type the following into the "Open" box and click "OK".
Then restart the computer. Please note the space after the equals sign.

sc config rpcss start= auto

Thanks Ben.

I think I have got most of the cleanup done.

Didn't take a reinstall like I had dreaded.

I found an "unauthorized entry" in the exceptions part of Windows fire wall.

It was an entry with no name, so I deleted it.

After that, all my services that were not starting, started up again. :)

Would you have any ideas how do I find the dam& thing that put it there ?

4 AV scanners couldn't find it.

I think whatever it was, was pretty sophisticated.

Thanks.

Always scary when something like that happens. This may not be the answer
you want, but one real possibility is an operating system that is not
properly
updated. Anyone who has installed or reinstalled an operating system from
scratch knows that it's a challenge to get all the updates before something
gets
through on one of the vulnerabilities. I never put sensitive information on
such a
computer until it's up to date.

I am on my desktop right now.

My laptop boots and xp pro sp3 starts but no network etc.

Erunt did not restore from an older config, sfc /scannow did not do

anything.

I have my sp2 install disk.

I don't have a disk image either.

Can someone help me ?

Andy

My system is up to date.

I have Automatic Updates disabled until time as I want to look at the available security updates.

2013-01-10 AU Setting AU scheduled install time to 2013-01-10

I would like to stop the unnecessary "phoning home when they know the line is down".

It's using resources that could be better spent on other things.
