Windows Recovery Console

I have a Compaq Evo with the Compaq Restore CD and the Windows Restore CD, I
don't think its a real MS XP Pro CD, just an image for the OEM machines.
Anyway, the PC will not boot, initially said it could not find a file. I
booted to the Recovery console, (by selecting "R")but when I get there it
says "The path or file specified is not valid.", and puts me to a C: prompt.
Can't execute any commands from the C prompt except HELP. I change to the D:
drive and did a dir, but then can't get back to the C: drive. Looks like the
C: drive boot sector got hosed?? Because when I issue the C: cmd from the d:
prompt, I get a "The specified drive is not valid, or there is no disk in the
drive."

So basically I can't run the Recovery Console to repair my XP Pro install.
Any ideas?

Normally when you get to the Recovery console, it'll ask u which partition
you want to work on. Subsequently, you are prompted for your administrator's
password.

If the recovery console can't find any partitions, there is something quite
wrong with your physical hard disk. Make sure its connected and configured
correctly in bios. Else, you gotta bring your hard disk for a change if its
still under warranty.

Cheers,

Dennis, I know I am most likly over stepping my bounds and you may correct me
if I am. However I have recently been reviewing newer computers and laptops
to be purchased by my customers. All most have the same problem as
Philzleads. These systems do not come with reovery DVD's. Most only come
with an icon that you create the DVD from which only restores the system to
it's orginial state. That would include all additional programs and the 30
day trial programs as will.
I have pleaded with the companies to provided separte OS software for just
this reason and they tell me, NO! SO unless people are taught to find their
I386 files and windows prodection files to build a cd from they really don't
have a way to get to the recovery console. My the download from Microsoft
that creates bootable disks would work?
