Windows Recording Control

In order to mix down midi playback to an audio file, I need the MS wavetable
software synth output to appear in the Windows Recording Control window, but
all I have to select from is Line In, and Microphone.

I seem to remember that there should be similar options in the record window
as in the playback Volume Control window, such as Wave, Software Synth etc,
but when I bring up the Windows Mixer, click Options and select Properties to
get the Recording window, the boxes I need to tick just don't exist, even
though they are available in the Volume Control window.

Any ideas how to get them back?

More info needed - soundcard, drivers, software you're using???

Cheers,

Thanks for response, Orange, and sorry to be so long coming back to you.

Dell Vostro 1700 laptop, XP Pro 32bit, SigmaTel onboard sound chip, sporting
Codec version 5.10.0.5511 (May 2007).

Perhaps Sigma-Tel aren't as helpful as RealTek or whoever in providing the
facilities I need. If so, do you know if it's possible to bolt-on additional
capabilities to the current driver?

And I'm not sure whether the codec details I get from system info are the
same as the actual hardware driver details, which I can't find mentioned
separately.

If you're comparing what you have now to something you had before, then
drivers and accompanying software differ from manufacturer to manufacturer.
What you describe sounds like vaguely like a Soundblaster control pannel.

If you haven't already done it, download and install the most recent drivers
from the Dell website. Check there also for addons. Alson try Googling for
"Sigmatel Addons" and see what it throws up. I tried and there appears to be
a free suite (whatever that means) available.

IIRC, there should be a Sigmatel icon in the systray, try double clicking on
it and see what appears.

On board sound is very basic normally, a USB Soundblaster would give you
much more options to play with. If ever you go down that route remember to
turn the onboard sound off in the BIOS before installing a soundcard.

Cheers,
Jerry
