Windows Publisher

What is Windows Publisher? When going on the Windows Update site, I get a
Security Warning asking me if I want to install Windows Publisher. I chose
do not install, but it won't get me to the update site. Then an error
message #0X8DDD0004 appears. How can this be corrected?

Hi, Helen.

Microsoft Publisher is a part of the Microsoft Office suite, but it also can
be purchased separately. Like other Office programs, there are several
versions, the most recent is Microsoft Office Publisher 2003. The program
is used to publish brochures, newsletters and many other kinds of documents.

Also, like other Office programs, it is not free, so it's pretty hard to get
it without knowing it. Windows Update should not offer to update Publisher
or other Office programs, because WU is only for Windows itself. To update
Office, you would need to go to Office Update
(http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/officeupdate/default.aspx). The newest
update program is called Microsoft Update; this one, introduced just this
month, does offer to update Office and other MS programs, in addition to
Windows itself; it is at
http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en.

Microsoft public newsgroups devoted to Publisher and other Office programs.

I don't have MS Office installed on my computer. I read some of the posts in
the Google Group and one person said she checked "yes" to install Windows
Publisher, and it worked for her. Maybe I should just install it and see
what happens, but I'm just a little paranoid.

I don't understand what that "one person" might have told you. I suspect
strongly that there has been a misunderstanding somewhere along the way, but
I'd need a crystal ball to guess where. :>( Can you point us to that post
you found with Google, or quote it here? I'd like to read it for myself.
So far as I know, there is no "Google Group", but Google Groups provides
access to many groups; in which specific group did you find this?

As they used to say in the old TV show, "That does not compute!"

In your next post, please tell us, step by step, how you are getting that
message. And please quote the message verbatim. I'm amazed that you are
offered anythng for Publisher if you do not have any part of Office on your
computer.

And could you please set your Outlook Express (in Tools | Options... | Send)
to Include message in reply? That way, I won't have to keep flipping back
to prior messages to see the context of your latest post.

Starting this morning when I go to the Windows Update site, It says
"checking if computer has the latest version of Windows updating software
for use with the website". Then I get an Internet Security Warning asking me
if I want to install this software. Publisher: Microsoft Windows Publisher.
I then get the option to "install" or "do not install". When I check do not
install, the problem is not solved. If I wait too long to make a decision of
installing or do not install, I get an error #0X8DDD0004. Whenever I go back
to Windows Update, that same message - "Internet Security Warning" about
Publisher appears. I don't use MS Office or MS Publisher.

This is where I found that post. After clicking on the link below, the
message is the 4th one down "Windows Update error: 0X8DDD0004" and Johann
was the name who posted. He said he installed this update and it worked.
Should I install it?

The new Microsoft Update "publishes" the updates to the
update service.

INSTALL the software.

It is NOT part of or in any way related to Microsoft
OFFICE/Publisher which is a printing/HTML program.

Microsoft. I see that Johann was given the same advice and followed it -
problem solved!

You are NOT being offered a free copy of Microsoft Publisher or an update to
it. As Jim says, it's just that Microsoft IS the publisher of the update
that you need.

Accept the update and you should be fine. If not, please let us know.
