Windows Picture and Fax Viewer

Hi,

I am currently scanning all my old photos, (big job), and I am carefully
adjusting each one to look at its best using an image manipulation
programme, Paint Shop Pro. My monitor has been gamma calibrated as
recommended by all image experts, and my photos look okay when viewed with
Paint Shop Pro or any of the other image manipulation programmes I may care
to open them with.

But of course, when one has finished manipulating, the easiest way to look
at the finished results is via Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. I have no
problem with the way that runs; it is really convenient way to look at
pictures.

The trouble is that all my photos look considerably darker when viewed
through that than they do through any other application. I have tried
looking through the relevant help sections on the P&F Viewer, and also in XP
generally, but I cannot find any way of adjusting the brightness level at
which the P&F Viewer displays images.

Has anyone else noticed this problem with the viewer, or is it just me? Does
anyone know of any workaround for the problem at all?

I'd suggest using the free Irfan View - www.irfanview.com - instead. It
is an excellent product and also provides the neatest and easiest gamma
adjustment I have met (including PaintShop Pro's)

Thanks Alex & Ronnie.

Yes, I already have Irfanview and the PSP Album. But it is the way that the
built-in viewer works so seamlessly with XP that I wanted specifically to
try and tweak that. None of the third-party album/slide-show software I have
tried is quite so simple to use, being without the options available in the
Folder Tasks pane for example.

I assume from your suggestions that tweaking P&F Viewer is not an option.

You assume right. :) It's a very basic image viewer without any really
advanced imaging options. Click the Help link on the bottom of the P&F
viewer to see the list of things you can do.
