Picture And Fax Viewer Viewing Problem

Hi

Getting the message:
"This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this
computer. Please contact your system administrator".

This is when trying to open jpg (or other image format) images from web
based email (Yahoo, Live etc). This is when trying to open a jpg
attachment. The image views with no issue in-line and can be saved to
disk.

This is using "Windows Picture And Fax Viewer" only.
They open OK if another image viewer is the default (MSPaint etc).

All other file type attachments (pdf, doc, etc) open with no issues.

For some reason "Windows Picture And Fax Viewer" is the only allowed
viewer in the policy.

There are group policies in effect and it all works OK if these are
removed or an administrator logs on.

Anyone has any idea what policy could cause this?

Start/Run and type in: regsvr32 shimgvw.dll or regsvr32 /i shimgvw.dll

Disable Picture and Fax Viewer
Start/Run: regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll

Or...

Disable or Restore Picture and Fax Viewer (Line 80)

If you disabled the fax/picture viewer by using regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll,
then changing user icons fail to work: You need to re-load the dll and it
will work. Have only tried this w/ XP Pro. Reload by typing in regsvr32
shimgvw.dll.

Thanks Kelly.

Clicking on a jpg (or other image file) from within Windows Explorer
works with no issues and is correctly displayed in Picture And Fax
Viewer.

It is only in web based email it does not work.
Will this fix this issue?

Kelly, this did not make any difference.
Likely it is Picture and Fax Viewer was not disabled as it works with no
issues when clicking on a jpg (or other image) from disk.

The only issue is from web based email when trying to launch/open image
attachments.
This works OK if group policy is disabled.
It works for administrators all the time (even when the group policies
are in use)

Has anyone come across this before and knows which group policy setting
is causing the issue?

I have searched the web and seen similar problems raised without a
resolution ever being found.

I guess no-one here does.

When I figure it out I will post back so the question is answered and
archived.
