When i upgrade to windows vista, a folder is created called windows.old.
Am i going to harm anything if i decide i don't need any of it and delete
the whole file?

you are a stupid user, because you've disabled the UAC!
With UAC enabled, you'll receive a prompt for elevation in order to easily
delete the windows.old folder.
