I have Windows NT (single workstation) and I was forced to upgrade other
software. When I attempted to install the software, I got a message saying that
it is no longer compatible with Windows NT. My next step now seems that I need
to "upgrade" my os. I had considered going to 2K, which I believe would be a
clean install. Is that correct? Is 2K a good choice or is there a better one?
If I do a clean install, do I have to set up partitions, etc? I have an
internal cd and zip drive, will I be able to access them automatically? I would
appreciate any help. Thank you.
Win 2000 will do an upgrade IF all the automated, pre-installation hardware and
software system checks pass -- MAYBE. When I did mine, it passed all the
checks, but the upgrade failed anyhow. I wound up doing a re-install from
scratch.
Re-install from scratch is not a bad thing, though. It gives you a chance to
re-partition and reformat your HD and start with a relatively clean Registry.
Most likely, it will be worth your while to take the time to install Win 2000
from scratch, install the latest Service Pack and patches, and re-install all
your apps.
DON'T FORGET TO SAVE AND BACKUP ALL YOUR DATA FIRST!
Your other option is Win XP Pro. While it supports all the newest gizmos, it
may or may not perform as well on older equipment.
