WINDOWS NOT STARTING

I hope someone can help me here, what happened was I got the Backdoor.Mutny virus on my computer, I checked out the Symantec website and followed the instructions but it wouldn't work. Somehow I managed to damage the registry, and I didn't back it up. When windows starts it loads my wallpaper but that's it, no icons, no start bar or anything. I can still start my computer in safe mode, is there any way I can fix the registry? I have my Compaq restore disks and everything, can I repair it from there? If so how? Any comments would be appreciated, thanks

Your Compaq restore CD will more than likely try to format your hard drive
and restore your system back to when you purchased your PC (deleting your
data as well.) Try this. When you press F8 to access safe mode during boot
up, choose Command Prompt. This will dump you into safe mode. Then type,
"scanreg" (without quotes). This will check and repair your registry. If
this does not fix your problem, boot into Safe Mode and see if you can use
the System Restore feature under START--ACCESSORIES--SYSTEM TOOLS--SYSTEM
RESTORE. Choose a date or restore point before the problem occured. This
will not damage you data.

Good Luck!
