when shutting down Windows XP Home Edition I get hung up -
can't alt-cntrl-del so ultimately have to unplug the
machine. This happens every other week of so. I've
looked at FAQ's, followed instructions to resolve this
problem - but it says if you already have Windows XP
Service Pack 1 which I have you don't need to install
anything else. I'm on automatic updates and have run the
update program which tells me I have all critical updates
already installed. Any help is appreciated.

How often can you shut the machine down normally, if at all? Do you have
any errors in your system event log? Did you install anything preceeding
this such as a new program or piece of hardware?
