Turning off auto-installation of updates when shutting down comput

Two Questions;

Background: I like to manually search for, select, and install updates.
Somehow, XP Home Edition -- SP3, has decided that it will automatically
download updates and then tells me it will automatically install them unless
I use a particular shut-down link when I shut down.

I turned off the automatic download feature in Security Center.

Q1. Where does XP Home Ed. store downloaded updates so I can eliminate
these extra updates I don't want?

Q2. How can I get rid of this shut-down screen that wants to install updates
on shut-down unless I click on a particular shut-down link?

I don't mind having the option, but I do mind not being able stop it. Some
downloads I just don't want.

Thanks,

Moxieman

Right click on My Computer/Properties/Automatic Updates tab and
configure your Auto Updates there, NOT in the Security Center.

What I'd do is tell Autoupdate to download & notify. Then manually do your
updates - choose custom, and deselect the ones you don't want - you can tell
it not to prompt you again.

Start here:

How to configure and use Automatic Updates in WinXP:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306525

I'd recommend that you select one of two available settings options:

Download but Notify (#2 on the list) - all applicable updates are downloaded
automatically but you must approve which updates are installed and when
they're installed;

Notify Only (#3 on the list) - You must select (approve) which updates are
downloaded; then you must approve which updates are installed and when
they're installed.

You will be able to 'hide' most updates if you don't want to download or
install them.

Thanks for the replies, all. I'll check things out as soon as I get home.

As I said, I've turned off automatic downloads, but how do I get rid of the
downloads that are now in the pipeline? Where does XP store the downloads
that it wants to install?

Just click on the updates, choose Custom, and deselect the ones you don't
want. Don't worry about the cached files.

1. Stop the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Stop
(Stopping the service will take a moment)

2. Delete the contents of the Download folder:

Start > Run > (type in) %windir%\SoftwareDistribution > [OK]
Open the Download folder and delete its contents
Close the window.

3. Start the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Start
(Starting the service will take a moment)
