Error with Auto Update

J

jmcclain

I have auto update turned on in XP Pro SP3

Each time I shut down, I get an option to " install updates and shut down".
The update is for a security update for Powerpoint viewer that i do not have
on this machine.

It keeps wanting to do the update but I am not sure how to delete.

Any help is appreciated

Jon

One step forward, one step back:

KB956900 does not point to a PowerPoint Viewer (PPV) update:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/956900

For Office 2003 SP3, other possibilities include KB948988, KB949041 (PPV
2003), and KB954038 (Office Compatibility Pack for various Office 2007
applications including PPV 2007 [SP1]; note that the compatibility pack
doesn't necessarily mean that any Office 2007 applications are actually
installed).

Sorry for the typo. KB 956500

Open Add/Remove Programs | Make sure the "Show Updates" box is checked
(top-right) | Scroll down and confirm that NEITHER of the following are
listed, Jim:

- MS Office PowerPoint Viewer 2003

- Security Update for Microsoft Office System 2007 (KB954038)

Rhetorical question: If you don't have PowerPoint Viewer 2003 or PowerPoint
Viewer 2007 installed and you chose not to install PowerPoint when you
installed Office 2003, how do you open PowerPoint files (e.g., PPS; PPT)?

I did find the Viewer in the list, but when i try to install the update, I
get an error saying "some updates could not be installed, KB956500".

I didn't think to look based on the error - just assumed it wasn't there.

It will not install the update though - any suggestions?

=> You may want to print or copy/paste these instructions into Notepad for
offline reference!

=> PPV = PowerPoint Viewer in the instructions below.

Proceed as follows, in order:

1. Stop the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Stop
(Stopping the service will take a moment)

2. Delete the contents of the Download folder:

Start > Run > (type in) %windir%\SoftwareDistribution > [OK]
Open the Download folder and delete its contents
Close the window.

3. Uninstall PPV 2003 via Add/Remove Programs & reboot. (It's safe to
ignore any "Such-and-such might not work if..." prompts.)

4. Download (SAVE) the installer for PPV 2007 SP1 to your desktop, do not
RUN it:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=E985ED98-5003-4DC1-88EC-3E151E4DC790

5. Double-click on the file you saved in #4 above to install PPV 2007 SP1.

After doing so, PowerPointViewer.exe should be located in C:\Program
Files\Microsoft Office\PowerPoint Viewer <=this folder.

6. Start the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Start
(Starting the service will take a moment)

=> Note: Automatic Updates will soon offer you Security Update for Office
2007 (KB954326). Despite the wording, it will only install an update for
PPV 2007 SP1 (and Office 2007 Compatibility Pack, if installed) so please
accept this update (which should install without a hitch now).

I've been having a similar problem for some weeks now. A supposedly vital Security Update for Powerpoint Viewer 2003 refuses to install but nobody at Mickeymousesoft wants to know unless I send them a wad of cash. Since the viewer itself is as much use as the proverbial chocolate teapot I wonder if it might be wise to simply remove it altogether?

I just received the notice that updates were ready to install and clicked okay to start the updater and I'm getting this same message/having this same problem -- which is why Google led me to this forum. If a typical user like me is getting this error, then millions around the world soon will and this thread is going to become very popular!

PA Bear -- will you please explain what is going on? Since the viewer is installed, why can't the fix install?
