Windows Movie Maker Continues to Crash

OK...
I need help because this is really pissing me off. My windows movie maker
has worked perfectly for a long time, but now it refuses to stay open. When
ever I try to get into my collections, WMM freezes and this dialog box pops
up saying that it has encountered a problem and needs to close. I have
windows XP, and the original version of MM. I first noticed that it was
acting funny when it wouldn't save one of my files as a video file, it would
stop saving at 77%, but the program didn't freeze. I do not have IE7, I have
heard that this messes it up, but I have no idea what is wrong with WMM.
Please help me, I have this huge urge to throw my computer against a wall and
then jump on it for a few minutes until all that is left are a few
scraps......

Original version of Movie Maker?
Do you mean 1.0? 2.0? or 2.1?

Is your video driver up to date?

Have you tried uninstalling SP3?

Have you tried doing a system restore
to a time before this issue began?

Mine does exactly the same thing - crashes all the time.
Have done all the advice below and have everything reinstalled and up to
date (drivers, SP3 and so on).

Some WinXP users have reported problems
after installing IE7. If this applies to your
situation ...uninstalling IE7 may be worth
a try.

I've also seen a report that disabling the
ffdshow codec could be the fix. To accomplish
this...open Movie Maker and go to...Tools /
Options / Compatibility tab...Uncheck...
ffdshow / OK.

===
You can disable ffdshow by going to...Start / Run
and enter the following command::

regsvr32.exe /u "C:\Program Files\ffdshow\ffdshow.ax"

After running that command, the regular
DivX/XviD codecs will be used instead of ffdshow.
You can enable ffdshow again with this command:

regsvr32.exe "C:\Program Files\ffdshow\ffdshow.ax"
