Windows moves the text left/right when I'm selecting

This isn't only windowsxp question.
I think maybe all Windows were like this.

In many applications when I try to select something on the right, as I move
the cursor to the right selecting, all of a sudden the text will move to the
left so that I'm selecting too much. So I move the cursor leftwards but
before I get to the right end of the desired selection, the text suddenly
moves to the right.

To select I have to use the shift arrow key method.

Can I turn off that feature of windows trying to helpful. It drives me
batty!
