Vibrating/dancing selection arrow

All at once the selection arrow (I don't know it's technical name), which is
moved by the mouse, started vibrating/dancing. If I leave it alone it moves
on its own and vibrates to the upper left hand corner of the screen. It's
almost impossible to click it at the right place as it skips around A reboot
of the laptop did not solve the problem. I have Windows XP Professional.

Any suggestions to stop the delirium tremens would be most welcome.

Using an attached mouse and/or the touchpad or the finger-stick in the
middle of some laptop keyboards to move the mouse pointer?

Lots of causes for this.

If it is inferred type mouse, use a mouse pad. As shinny surfaces can
cause problems.

If it is a ball type mouse, take the ball out (there is a ring you
unlock) and clean out all of the dust bunnies out of there.

If wireless:

1) Change the batteries

2) Move the receiver closer to the mouse, or the mouse closer to the
receiver.

Thanks so much. It was the shiny surface and/or stuck click. Problem solved,
and the patient is calm now.
