Windows MM causes me to lose connection from the internet.

The Window Movie Maker will cause me to lose my internet connection when I play it while online, every time. And it doesn't matter if I play it in Window Media Player or Winamp. Can anyone tell me why this happens and how I can fix it? Does this happen to anyone else? I don't get anything to send back to microsoft either

Other problem I have seen in here today is how the WMM freezes the computer....I also am getting used to the save button. But when I open the WMM again, it will allow me to get what I worked on last but it is untitled..why does it lose the name? I wasn't sure of what to do so I kept the ones that I had already named and kept renaming the untitled with the same name and put letters at the end,,a, b, c, d, e, etc went all of the way up to p. lol I am a novice for sure. But still having great fun with it

That is rediculous, though. That other person is right, microsoft has just got to fix this problem. All you people out there with the fixes,,,is microsoft paying you for these? If yes, great. but if not,,,shame on Microsoft. Just my 2 cents---sorry---are they fixes that you created and does microsoft ever use them and pay you nicely for your work? Just wondering

I will try to find the things that the other people mentioned, like getting rid of .bak and such. Codec--what's a codec, anyway? ...lol You don't have to answer that. I will look it up

Thank you
Judy

Hi Judy,

Your post is the first thing I read today.... a refreshing start. With all
your frustrations, you're '...having great fun with it...'.

Most of the freezes, hangs, crashes with MM2 are resolved by following the
info on the Problem Solving > Acceleration and Codecs page of my site.... if
you get beyond those, it gets even more fun.

You don't have to know what a codec is.... but you need to know how to
search your hard drive for a particular file and then rename it.

No, Microsoft doesn't pay me.... but the people I work with at Microsoft are
each great individuals, who I enjoy working with.... and Movie Maker has
been my primary video editing tool now for years. I also enjoy helping
others by sharing what I learn. I guess money would help, so I'm trying to
figure out how to make some while I'm at it.

Good luck,

Hi Judy,

If there is any likely hood that it is a codec issue (and it may be) then
go to my website and download the program called "Rename Codec". when you
run it it will install itself. The program is completely self contained and
does not deposit any program code anywhere other than the directory you
select.

Run the program and select EVERY codec it lists and tell it to rename
them...you do not need to worry what they are renamed too. You can then
close the program and run Movie Maker.....I believe it to be good practise
to reboot after renaming the codecs, that way they will fail to register
properly and therefore not be available.

If Movie Maker then starts to perform properly, your solution has been
found.

Whether or not the program fixes your problem you should after using Movie
Maker run the Codec Renamer again....obviously you select the second option
to restore them, select all of the files you are shown and complete the
process.

Hope this helps

Best Wishes.....John Kelly

One more question before I proceed. My computer came with WindowsMe and then I upgraded to WindowsXP. I didn't realise that I had WMM with WindowsME, if I did. Was learning bunches of other stuff.

Now, could it be that I still have the version that came with WindowsME. My "about" has
Window Media Player version 5.1 (service pack 1
- then the copyright
Windows Media Player version 2.0.3312.

Why does it mention the 2.0 version? Did the service pack get attached to the 2.0 making it version 5.1? Stupid question, huh? lo

Thanks
Judy

It's a little confusing when reading. Your versions are the same numbers
that I see.... but I'm looking at the About info in Movie Maker 2, not the
Windows Media Player, so it reads

Windows Movie Maker version 2.0.3312.0 - if your first two collections are
for Video Effects and Transitions, you're there as version 1 didn't have
them.

I was just in your Photostory site and I want to congratulate you on the award you got. I am very pleased that this award went to such a nice guy. A warm feeling came over me when I realised that there are just some things that money can't buy. Your dedication and willingness to help others is priceless. :)

Thanks for the warm note.... I'm leaving tomorrow for the MVP Summit at
Microsoft, learning a bit more about Movie Maker and Photo Story, and some
vacationing on the way back...

.....so if I don't answer yours or others questions for a week and a half....
that'll be why. But I'll be reading and answering a few as I can find an
internet connection.
