In the system tray I've got an icon for Windows Messenger.
In the past, I've disabled this by Start > Run > gpedit.msc >
Administrative Templates > Windows Components >
Windows Messenger > Enabling both items in the right pane.

This no longer seems to remove this icon. What is causing
this to appear and how do I stop it?

Thanks.

Right click on the Toolbar | Properties | Customize. Find the Messenger icon
and change the behavior to Always Hide.

What toolbar? Right click options on the icon
in the system tray are Open, Exit, and Sign in as.

Not the icon, the toolbar. Right click in a blank area of the toolbar.

Quick Launch Toolbar, Taskbar, and System Tray are all parts of the Windows
Toolbar and right clicking on a blank area of any section works.

I've never thought of the system tray as a toolbar,
but I suppose it is. As for the quick launch, if you
assume it is docked then I agree, otherwise no.

Hi Jason,

I always use Open (in the Messenger dialog), and in the Preferences
(might be Options, not sure as it's been a while), there is an option to
not load on Windows Startup. Uncheck that and any other option to that
effect. Why hide what you can prevent from loading in the first place.

Control panel > Add or remove programs > Add/remove windows components >
unpick [ ] Windows Messenger.

Administrative tools > Services > Messenger [disable]

Even better.

Control panel > Add or remove programs > Add/remove windows components >
