I have read in several locations that windows messenger is part of windows
and problems can arise from removing it -is there a way to allow me to right
click the icon and 'exit' without that warning that other applications like
msie or messenger have to be closed before I can exit or, at least remove the
icon? Thanx

Replied to [Grampy Pete]s message :
When I rt click the (two people) icon lower right, click disable it says it
can't close as an application is running such as msie or outlook express. I
have OE 6, xp sp2.
I've tried OE>tools >messenger>options>disable from starting and stop from
running in the background but it doesn't help. Removing messenger might
cause problems -is there a way to either remove the icon or at least disable
it? Thank you.
The following line will uninstall Messenger :
rundll32.exe advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %systemroot%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
Good Luck, Ayush.
Hi pete,
If you don't use Messenger then do this:
Click Start >> Control panel >> Add/Remove on the Add and Remove Control
panel click on Add and Remove Components in the left Side Panel.
On the Add/Remove components Uncheck the check box for the Messenger and
close.
On the Notification Area Right click on it and select Exit and as you
mentioned on your Previous message to Ayush that you done it on the OE be
sure it didn't checke4d back and Reboot or Hit Refresh (F5).
Any Programs will not effected by the absent of Messenger, unless you
configure them to use it like OE.
HTH.
