Windows Messenger HELP!!!!!

This is probably an O.E. issue. But it might involve editing the registry, so I thought
it might be best to post in this group. Windows XP 1a (SP2 is NOT an option for this
system), The Windows Messaging program is disabled in Start/Program Access and Defaults.
In the Main Identity of Outlook Express Tools/Options/General tab, Automatically log on to
Windows Messenger is disabled. That works fine. But, I created a new O.E. identity, and
when I switch to it, Windows Messenger always opens, even with the Tools
menu/Options/General tab Automatically log on to Windows Messenger DISABLED (unchecked).
Every time I switch to that new identity in O.E. Windows Messenger opens. How can I stop
this?

Stop Windows Messenger from Auto-Starting.

In the Identity in question:

Go to Start>Run>Regedit>OK. Find and delete the
following Registry Key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER
\Software
\Microsoft
\Windows
\CurrentVersion
\Run
\MSMSGS - {Delete}

Maybe I wasn't clear. Windows Messenger does not run when I boot the system, nor does it
run when I open Outlook Express in the Outlook Express Main Identity. It runs when I'm in
Outlook Express and click the File menu, Switch Identity, and switch to the second Outlook
Express Identity, even though in the Tools menu/Options/General tab Automatically log on
to Windows Messenger is disabled for that second identity. I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT WINDOWS
XP PROFILES, I am talking about a second Identity in Outlook Express in the same XP
profile. It would not be in the RUN key that you describe, nor is it in MSCONFIG/Startup
tab, because Windows Messenger does not run when the system boots, ONLY when I switch into
the second Outlook Express Identity.

You also need Contacts to be unchecked in OE View - Layout

From http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/disabmes.htm

To prevent MS Messenger from loading with OE you must do BOTH of these
things if you don't want to edit the Registry:

In Tools | Options uncheck the option to automatically logon to Messenger.

AND

In View | Layout uncheck the Contacts Pane.

OR

Go to Start | Run and type

Regedit

Go to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Outlook Express

Add a New, DWORD value called Hide Messenger and set the value to 2.
(This step is required to prevent a long delay when opening OE with the
Contacts pane enabled)

To just stop it from running at all follow this advice from Kelly:

"Only 3 Registry edits are required to stop Messenger and get rid of the
delay in OE. Start/Run/Regedit

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Messenger\Client

Add the following values as New, DWord Values:

PreventRun
PreventAutoRun

Set the value of each of these to 1

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Outlook Express

Add a New, DWORD value called Hide Messenger and set the value to 2.
(This step is required to prevent a long delay when opening OE with the
Contacts pane enabled)

You can also stop the spam without disabling Messenger. In Messenger select
Tools | Options and open the Privacy tab. In MSN Messenger 5 there a check
box "Only people on My Allow List can see my status and send me messages"
that you can check (turn on). In Windows Messenger 4.7 you can select the
"All other users" in My Allow List and move it to My Block List. In both
cases the popups should stop and you can still IM with your friends.

Thank you to all who helped. Creating the registry strings, and disabling the Contacts
pane got rid of the annoying Messenger log on when switching to the second identity in
Outlook Express. I'm assuming that it's a Windows XP 1a bug, because unchecking the
Automatically log on to Windows Messenger option in Outlook Express Tools/Options should
have given the desired result.
