Windows Mediaplayer reports errors?

Why is it that everytime I try to play a MP3 or any movie clip with
MediaPlayer, I get a severe error, so bad that a report to MS is
offered, and explorer closes?

I think I'm up to date on updates for Win2000Pro, although you can't
be sure these days.
