Mediaplayer will not play mpeg2

Hi,I'm pulling my hair out trying to fix this problem.
Here it is;

Win2k serv.pack3
PowerDVD 5
WMP9 ugraded from 6.4,but didn't help.
2.4 gig Pentium 4
512 meg.ram
Laptop display with SiS 650 on board video.

Whenever I try to play mpeg2 files with Mediaplayer my processor immediately goes to 100% usage.
I get about 20 sec. of video with no sound before Mediaplayer freezes and I have to use Taskmanager
to kill the process.
PoerDVD plays these same files perfectly,of course with less than 15% processor usage.

The exact format of the files is 720x540 with AC3 audio..All other supported formats play perfectly
by Mediaplayer.

Ive tried enabling and disabling hardware acceleration.I'm currently using the newest available
audio and video drivers for my system. If anyone has any idea what the problem might be I'd
appreciate it.
Although this is not a crippling problem with video, since PowerDVD works fine.I often download small
mpegs and recieve email from friends with small video clips. All have the .mpg extension and I'd
like to use Mediaplayer to play these small videos and it's a pain never knowing wich one will play
and wich will hang.Thanks.

You might want to try with troubleshooting video. I'd start here
http://www.nwlink.com/~zachd/pss/pss.html#mpeg and see if making adjustments
to either WMP's hardware acceleration or the system video acceleration makes
a difference.
