Windows Media Player volume problems

Ever since I downloaded last week's Windows "update" my WMP volume has been
going crazy when I play mp3s. The volume goes up, down, up down randomly as
I am listening and it's driving me nuts. I recall having this problem a
while ago but don't remember how I fixed it (or if it fixed itself). Has
anyone else had this experience and knows how to remedy it?

I did try fiddling with that. It wasn't on to begin with, but on, off, it
doesn't make a difference.

Sounds like I'm having the same problem as the original poster, but none of
the offered solutions seem right. I haven't changed my hardware at all.
