Windows Media Player 11 - HIGH CPU Usage - Why?

This may not be the right newsgroup (please redirect me) and this has
probably been discussed before now, but.....

When I simply play a CD using WMP 11.0, the CPU usage goes to 95% and
anything else I am trying to do slows to a crawl.

I've searched MSKB and not found a solution or acknowledgement that it
is a problem. Googled and found suggestions to roll back to WMP 10,
but also found people saying that version 10 was a resource hog as
well.

Bottom line, why is this happening and what can I do about it?
